From North To South Of Batan Island
The third day of our Batanes Islands sojourn was spent exploring the Southern and Northern part of Batan Island, the mainland of Batanes group of Islands. Batan Island is where the center of commerce and seat of the provincial government lie. This is the most populated of all the islands in the province. It is composed of the municipalities of Basco, Ivana, Uyugan, and Mahatao. The entire island is blessed with natural beauty: rolling hills, beautiful beaches, old Spanish churches and fortresses, and pre-Hispanic settlements. We hired the hotel’s van service for an entire day which costed us P3000.
The first part of the journey started at the Southern part and were as follows:
- Mahatao Barrio
- Rakuh-a-idi old settlement which the locales call the fishing village
- Rakuh-a-payaman which is the best landmark of Batanes. It is fondly called as the Marlboro country of the Philippines
- Itbud Village where Vahay ni Dakay is located
- Barrio Uyugan where the old Spanish bridge was built
- Uvoy Ivana where we came across the Honesty Coffee Shop and San Jose Church (the oldest church in Basco, Batanes)
The latter part of our third day started with lunch at Vatang Grill and Restaurant. It’s one of the newest restaurants located along National Road, Barrio Ivana, Basco, Batanes. Afterwhich we visited the following:
- Chawa Viewing Deck in Mahatao
- Tukon Barrio where Mt. Carmel Church, PAG-ASA Weather Station and Fundacion Pacita are located
- Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel
- Valugan Boulder Beach
- Naidi Hills where the Basco lighthouse is located
- Basco town where San Carlos Borromeo Church is located
